Crossings
Three interlinked stories of children experiencing displacement and finding new homes in early 20th century South-east Asia. Set in the early first half of the 20th century, Crossings tells the stories of four young people: Samy, Abdul and Mei Ling, Majeed, and Lily. Samy, from a peasant family in South India, is sent to work on a rubber plantation in Malaya. Abdul Majeed, of Indian origin – and his Chinese friend Mei Ling – live in cosmopolitan Singapore, enjoying life in the streets of the city. Lily is an Anglo-Burmese girl living in Rangoon – until the Japanese invade British Burma, and Lily must flee…Their stories are interconnected through the history of a region, painting an evocative picture of wandering, migrant lives, spread across the Indian Ocean.
