A House for Dubki (English)
Yasmin's home is a tin box, burning hot in summer and freezing cold in winter. But Dubki, her stray dog friend, has no home at all. How unfair! So Yasmin decides to build one for Dubki, just like she has seen her Ammi and Abbu build for others. This heart-tugging story revolves around the idea of home in a child's mind. At its centre is a family of migrant workers from Bengal who construct houses for others while living in hovels themselves, displaced in an alien city while longing for their own home back in a village by the sea. Told in the voice of little Yasmin, it speaks straight to the child reader. Illustrations evoke the affection and sympathy of the narrative, softening pages with a gentle glow of joy and hope.
