The Magic Of Indian Folktales
Folktales have enchanted the young and old alike for centuries. The 24 stories within come from different parts of India and are as varied in content as the weather and terrain in these regions. These timeless tales, besides celebrating India's diversity, speak of India's dark, inaccessible jungles, rugged mountain ranges, bubbling streams, and overflowing rivers. A tale from Sangla in Himachal Pradesh tells what happens to two hunter brothers when they encounter a mischievous mountain spirit. A story from Ladakh tells how a lazy man uses his wit to change his luck. From the Malabar coast comes the story of a Namboodiri and a Chinese merchant. Meghalaya, the land of clouds, knits together the world of men and birds in a memorable tale. Tripura has a strange story about the origin of the river Gumti and so on-stories worth reading, recalling, and repeating, over and over again.
