Mother
A shepherd boy, now a university professor, proudly recalls his mother's struggles to lead her caste people. Whether it is in the text or the illustration, existing children's literature tends to feature elite children and their life-worlds. These books throw open the doors of that shuttered house to let in lively children of different classes, castes, rellgious cultures, and physical abilities. They bring altogether new stories to the world of children's literature and fill it with new sights, smells, sounds, locations, joys and sorrows. Different Tales is an original contribution to a more inclusive India.
